Winter camping checklist

Cold changes the answer for sleep, water, and fuel. A winter camping checklist with the margins that keep a cold night from becoming a serious one.

What temperature rating do I need for winter camping?

Take the forecast low for the valley you are sleeping in and subtract at least 10 degrees. Bag ratings are survival ratings for many manufacturers, not comfort ratings, so a margin is not optional.

How do I keep water from freezing?

Use insulated bottles, store them upside down so ice forms away from the lid, and sleep with your filter and one bottle inside your sleeping bag. A frozen filter is usually a ruined filter.

Can I use a regular tent for winter camping?

A sturdy three season tent works for cold nights without heavy snow loading or high wind, if you can anchor it properly and vent it. A four season tent is about snow load and wind, not warmth.

How much fuel does melting snow take?

Plan roughly three times your summer fuel for the same number of meals. Melting takes far more energy than heating water, and an insulated pot with a lid meaningfully reduces it.

Is winter camping safe for beginners?

Yes, with a short first trip: one night, close to the car, outside avalanche terrain, with a full margin on sleep insulation. The skills scale up from there, and avalanche terrain requires formal training before you enter it.
