The Big Hatchet Mountains Wilderness Study Area, situated in southwestern New Mexico, is a rugged and isolated block fault mountain range. It is notable for its massive limestone cliffs, diverse vegetation zones ranging from desert grasses to piñon-juniper forests, and its significance as habitat for desert bighorn sheep and bat colonies. The Continental Divide National Scenic Trail also traverses this remote and challenging wilderness.
