The Lee Metcalf Wilderness, encompassing the picturesque Bear Trap Canyon, offers a unique blend of wild river adventures and serene hiking. As one of the first wilderness areas managed by the BLM, it provides exciting whitewater rafting opportunities on the Madison River, featuring the challenging Class IV-V Kitchen Sink rapid. Beyond the thrilling rapids, visitors can hike the nine-mile Bear Trap National Recreation Trail, which follows the river through a dramatic canyon bordered by 1,500-foot cliffs.
