Michigan Islands Wilderness

Michigan Islands Wilderness comprises three small islands (Pismire, Scarecrow, and Shoe) in Lakes Huron and Michigan, offering a critical nesting habitat for numerous colonial bird species. Established as a Wilderness Area in 1970, it is managed by the Fish & Wildlife Service. Due to its importance for nesting birds, public visitation is generally prohibited, making it a sanctuary for wildlife rather than a recreational destination.
