Patuxent Research Refuge is the only wildlife refuge in the United States established specifically for wildlife research, overseen by the U.S. Geological Survey’s Eastern Ecological Science Center. This unique refuge, boasting expansive unbroken tree cover rare in central Maryland, provides critical habitat for deep-forest songbirds like the Scarlet Tanager. Visitors can engage in a variety of outdoor activities including hiking, biking, fishing, and birding, while also exploring the refuge's informative visitor center.
